DYSTONIA is a neurological muscle disorder that causes uncontrollable, painful spasms in one or more parts of the body. While not widely known, dystonia affects an estimated 500,000 people in North America alone – more than Muscular Dystrophy, Huntington’s disease and Lou Gehrig’s disease combined.
In 2007, Jake then 11 years old, was diagnosed with early onset childhood dystonia. In 2008 he underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) a treatment for dystonia. A year after DBS surgery, Jake is back in school, off all medications, and wearing regular sneakers for the first time in three years. Despite this significant progress he remains unable to use his hands to write and perform other fine motor skill functions. Jake’s back and feet are often in pain. Perhaps most importantly, his dystonia is not cured, so we continue to ride as we search for better treatments and a cure.
The funds raised through Jake’s Ride for Dystonia Research will benefit The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to find better treatments and cures for these movement disorders, and to provide medical patient information. Last year the ride raised enough money to fund 4 research grants!
